calm the storm, to stop the rain?

Special You

I was going through a rather rough patch. (To say the least) Most days were a mere matter of survival during that point in time. I felt like the lowest person on earth and the worst Christian there ever was. Pride was quickly being snuffed out and close to non-existent. Most of the time, I didn’t even feel like I was living in my own life but instead trapped in some nightmare unable to wake. Even the littlest responsibilities seemed immense. The best days were the ones I completed all my duties of the day without bawling my eyes out before making it through the front door.

This day in particular was sunny blue sky to the world but still very dark and cloudy in mind’s eye. I was filling up at the gas station. Things were okay. (All things considered) Okay enough to look up and notice the world carrying on around me. A biker pulled up on the other side of the pump and hopped off. When they pulled off their helmet I noticed it was a woman… an older woman. It really didn’t seem to fit. She looked like a Sunday school teacher from one of those churches where you have to wear a dress and if all the songs don’t put you to sleep the message will (no offense if your church is like that—just trying to paint a picture is all). I’m not saying she was bad, I actually felt quite relieved to see her. There wasn’t a need to keep my guard up. It was just funny because the ride didn’t seem to match the appearance—at all!

She smiled and greeted me. This was my best day in a while so I actually smiled back and decided to converse with her. I asked about her bike because I was thinking about getting one too. She started telling me all about it, then a little about her past. She explained how during the prior year she’d fell on some hard times and needed to get a cheaper ride into town—that’s where the bike came in. (Can’t beat the fuel costs) She liked it, but I picked up a slight indication that it wasn’t her first choice of a vehicle. She seemed like the kind of person that once you get started talking they can just go on and on until before you know it they just told you their entire life story. Trying to be polite and feeling better, I actually began to enjoy having someone nice to listen to. Then all of a sudden she stopped, looked me straight in the eyes and got this strange look on her face. It was as though my eyes were windows showing the way to all my secrets, and she just happened to glance at the right moment and capture them all at once. She said, “Do you know how special you are?”
